Westlake Residence

Westlake, CA

The landscape design for this bluff-top plateau takes cues from its dramatic context, and features a custom home shaped in an arc, acknowledging 360-degree views of rocky outcrops and distant vistas. Formed of solid rock, the land is hard, sun-blasted and wind-blown. Native Oaks, Toyon, Redbud, and Sycamore are dug into the site, forming protected pockets for native grasses and shrubs.

A wild meadow area surrounding the home is planted with summer-dormant Agrostis pallens and accents of colorful native Yarrows and Verbena. Large site boulders, selected for their unique shapes and colors, are placed to frame certain views from the house

In contrast to the wide-open site, a walled entry court is lushly planted with Ferns, small scale Zamia Palms, African Iris and Pittosporum hedging.
